ALTRINCHAM FC PLAYERS OF 1963/64
Pen Pictures of the Altrincham Team, 1963-64.
From Altrincham v Wrexham match programme, November 1963.
DOWNIE- The latest of Freddie Pye's signings from Doncaster Rovers. Made a consistent run of first team appearances last season. Looks forward to a good run of Cheshire League football.
IAN GREAVES- A great full-back. Feels much more at home since his switch from the left flank. His experience with League clubs Manchester United and Oldham proving a great asset to the team. Holder of a Cup medal gained in the 1958 final.
GERRY HARRISON- New to Cheshire league football this season. At present on the staff of the "Daily Express" but finding time to be one of the fittest members of the team. Gaining experience with every game. A former officer, having served in the army. [Gerry went on to be a reporter for many years on the BBC's NW regional news programme].
BRIAN JARVIS- Proving to be one of the best signings of the close season. A forceful wing-half, one of the most rapid "recoverers" in the game. Always a consistent performer, very popular with the crowd. Signed in the close season from Oldham Athletic.
JOHN HIGGINS- The greatest club captain to be at Moss Lane. A tower of strength in the team. Always a supreme effort in every match. Formerly with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic. Holder of a Cup medal from the 1958 final. Respected by all his players, known to them as "Big John.... Recent national coverage of his life story in Sunday newspaper which caused a stir in the football circles.
BOBBY ENGLISH- Pin-up boy of the team. Formerly with Manchester United, a bundle of energy in attack or defence. His enthusiasm in the game keeps him as a popular choice for the left-half position. Very happy in the Cheshire league circle.
ROY ISHERWOOD- Was understudy to Brian Douglas at Blackburn for many seasons. A really great winger, has been responsible for scoring and making many of the goals at Moss Lane this year.
FREDDIE TABERNER- Rated by all the supporters as the best forward to be at Moss Lane since the war. A brilliant player with exceptional ball control. Top goal scorer and it looks as though nothing can stop him from banging them in. A school master, he hails from Lancashire. Formerly with Leeds, Horwich and Wigan.
JOHNNY WORTH- A local boy who joined the side straight from the amateur circles. Has never let the club down, he chases everything that has the slightest chance of becoming a goal. Gaining in experience with every game, has taken some rough treatment from many centre-halves.
KEN FINNEY- One of the most experienced players in the league. Has recently been out of the side with an injury. A rocket shot that has placed him second in the goals scoring table. Previously with Stockport County and Tranmere Rovers. A very likeable character who delights in poaching a goal.
PADDY MULVEY- A crowd-pleasing winger with a deadly shot. A very consistent player, who helps the defence as well as the forwards. Formerly with Blackburn Rovers and previously experienced Cheshire league with Sankeys of Wellington. A nightmare for any full back to play against.
